Center for Humanistic Change is excited to host the 2017 Spring SAP Consortium, a session on increasing cultural competency and how to be our best selves. This session is an opportunity for participants to:

• Practice appreciating, celebrating and respecting diversity
• Learn and understand cycles of oppression
• Explore anything you’ve wanted to know about race, culture
and diversity

Meet our Presenters:

Phyllis Alexander, MS has been a champion for social justice for several decades and a civil rights professional for over twenty years working for both corporate America and city government.

Phyllis is an experienced coalition builder and trainer and credits her skills to her 27-year affiliation with the National Coalition Building Institute, an international social justice/ social change organization. Phyllis has had several roles with NCBI including senior trainer and since 2012 as President of the NCBI Board of Directors. In addition to facilitating NCBI workshops including their Welcoming Diversity training, Phyllis facilitates a variety of conversations ranging from courageous conversations about race, to strategic planning sessions for boards.

Phyllis has a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics and later received a Master’s of Science in Community Economic Development from Southern New Hampshire University.

Recently retired as the City of Allentown Neighborhood Coordinator, Phyllis is an active member of her community. Her community engagement includes volunteering as a board member of the Freedom Memorial, a local non-profit dedicated to commemorating the life and continuing the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & Coretta Scott King. Phyllis is also the Vice President of the Resurrected Community Development Corporation (RCDC), a faith based non-profit dedicated to social justice. Per their vision statement, RCDC is committed to creating communities of equity, excellence and empowered residents.

Phyllis has been recognized for her community service, receiving an Allentown YWCA Women’s Leadership Award and the Humanitarian Award from the Allentown NAACP. Phyllis has two daughters and lives in Allentown, PA.

Native of Southeast San Diego, Tyrone Russell, MS is an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. Tyrone graduated from Colgate University with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. He holds a Master’s of Science degree in Counseling and College Student Personnel from Shippensburg University. Tyrone has worked for numerous colleges and universities as an Assistant Director of Residence Life, a Counselor, Instructor, and Program Coordinator. He has mentored numerous students and supervised over 150 individuals within 9 different teams during his short yet influential campaign. From dealing with bias incidences, and managing significant crisis, to developing large-scale social events for both youth and adult professionals, Tyrone has a rich history of service. He currently serves on a regional committee dedicated to constructing high school leadership conferences in Eastern Pa, conducts team building workshops for teachers and corporate staffs in the Northeast, and designs and executes seminars and training for youth. Until 2016 Tyrone worked as the Director of Multicultural Affairs at Lehigh University. Tyrone now serves as the Coordinator of Racial and Ethnic Justice with the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, and CEO of Lehigh Valley Faces Marketing and Development firm.
